The Korean 10-Step Skincare Routine Explained

The Korean 10-step routine has become practically iconic. It's often cited in beauty stores, on YouTube, and in skincare groups on social media as the ultimate way to achieve healthy, radiant skin. But what exactly does this routine entail? And more importantly: do you really need to use ten products every day to see results?

The short answer: no, definitely not.

In this article, we'll explain the origins of the 10-step routine, the underlying philosophy, and how you can adapt it to your skin, lifestyle, and needs. Because K-beauty isn't about doing more—it's about making smart and conscious choices.

The origin of the 10-step routine

The 10-step routine originated in South Korea, where skincare is deeply intertwined with daily self-care. The philosophy is based on the idea that healthy skin begins with prevention, not correction. By giving your skin what it needs daily, you prevent premature aging, blemishes, and a dull complexion.

In South Korea, it's not uncommon to take ample time for your skin. However, not all Koreans follow ten steps every day. The routine is intended as a flexible structure, not a fixed schedule.

    These are the 10 steps

    1. Oil cleanser
Removes makeup, SPF and excess sebum without drying out the skin.

    2. Water-based cleanser
Thoroughly cleanses the skin and removes any traces of oil or dirt.

    3. Exfoliant (chemical or gentle physical)
Removes dead skin cells and stimulates cell renewal (1-3x per week).

    4. Toner
Balances your skin’s pH and prepares it for the next steps.

    5. Essence
Hydrates and strengthens the skin barrier; unique to K-beauty.

    6. Serum / Ampoule
Targets specific skin problems such as pigment spots or wrinkles.

    7. Sheet mask
A moisture boost and moment of relaxation (2-3x per week).

    8. Eye cream
Nourishes the sensitive skin around the eyes and prevents fine lines.

    9. Moisturizer
Seals everything in and retains hydration.

    10. SPF (in the morning)
Protects against UV radiation and premature skin aging.

Why you can also do less

While these ten steps are ideal, it's not necessary to follow them all every day. In fact, a simplified routine works better for many people. Your skin doesn't always need layers of products, especially if you have sensitive skin or are just starting out with skincare.

A good foundation consists of, for example:

    1. Oil cleanser (evening)

    2. Water-based cleanser

    3. Toner or essence

    4. Serum

    5. Moisturizer

    6. SPF (in the morning)

These six steps will get you a long way. Want an even more minimalist look? Then choose a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and SPF—as long as you use products that suit your skin type and needs.

    Quality over quantity

The key to success isn't the number of steps, but consistency and the right products. Listen to your skin, test new products gradually, and don't be afraid to simplify.

At BeautyKorea, you'll find a wide range of K-beauty products, from serums and toners to complete sets for each skin type. Whether you prefer a comprehensive routine or a few strong basics, we're happy to help you get started.
