The Korean 10-step skincare routine explained (and why you may also do less of it)

The Korean 10-step routine has now become almost iconic. It is often referred to in beauty shops, on YouTube and in skincare groups on social media as the way to get healthy, glowing skin. But what exactly does this routine entail? And more importantly, do you really need to use 10 products every day to see results?

The short answer: no, definitely not.

In this article, we explain where the 10-step routine comes from, the idea behind it, and how you can adapt it to your skin, lifestyle and needs. Because K-beauty is not about doing more - it's about making smart and conscious choices.

The origins of the 10-step routine

The 10-step routine comes from South Korea, where skincare is deeply intertwined with daily self-care. The philosophy is based on the idea that healthy skin starts with prevention, not correction. By giving your skin what it needs every day, you prevent premature skin ageing, blemishes and a dull complexion.

In South Korea, it is not uncommon to take extensive time for your skin. Yet far from all Koreans follow 10 steps every day. The routine is meant to be a flexible structure, not a set schedule.

These are the 10 steps

  1. Oil cleaner
Removes make-up, SPF and excess sebum without drying out the skin.

  2. Water-based cleanser
Cleanses the skin thoroughly and removes residual oil or dirt.

  3. Exfoliant (chemical or soft physical)
Removes dead skin cells and stimulates cell renewal (1-3x a week).

  4. Toner
Balances your skin's pH level and prepares it for next steps.

  5. Essence
Hydrates and strengthens the skin barrier; unique to K-beauty.

  6. Serum / Ampoule
Targets specific skin problems such as pigmentation or wrinkles.

  7. Sheet mask
A moisture boost and relaxation moment (2-3x a week).

  8. Eye cream
Nourishes the sensitive skin around the eyes and prevents fine lines.

  9. Moisturiser
    Seals everything and retains hydration.

  10. SPF (in the morning)
Protects against UV rays and premature skin ageing.

Why you may also do less of them

While these 10 steps are an ideal picture, it is not necessary to apply them all every day. In fact, for many people, a simplified routine works better. Your skin doesn't always need layers of products, especially if you have sensitive skin or are just starting out with skincare.

For example, a good foundation consists of:

  1. Oil cleanser (in the evening)

  2. Water-based cleanser

  3. Toner of essence

  4. Serum

  5. Moisturiser

  6. SPF (in the morning)

These six steps will take you a long way. Want to go even more minimalist? Then opt for cleanser, serum, moisturiser and SPF - as long as you use products that suit your skin type and needs.

Quality over quantity

The key to success is not in the number of steps, but in consistency AND the right products. Listen to your skin, test new products step by step and don't be afraid to simplify.
